June 2010 Player of the Month

Matthew Stephen Young has been directing, teaching and performing improv comedy since 1991 in a variety of places including ComedySportz. He was even a founding member of "Houseful of Honkeys" with Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) And now he brings his awesomeness into our ComedySportz lineup of shows.

Matt is the director of THE HIGH, ComedySportz's improvised teen drama a la Gossip Girl or 90210. Alongside producer Andy Goldblatt and a very talented cast of characters, THE HIGH ran for two years at ComedySportz before closing its school doors... Only to have them reopened for special performances at the Hollywood Fringe. The response was so strong that THE HIGH will be returning to the ComedySportz Main Stage this fall.

Matt also put together CHARLIE PRESTO AND THE MAGICAL ACADEMY OF MYSTERY AND SORCERY, an improvised show similar to the stories of a famous boy wizard you may have heard of. And he recently debuted GRAB BAG THROW DOWN to the ComedySportz Studio Series. Three teams of improv players (teams are made at random that night) compete in long-form improv scenes. One team wins and returns next week to compete against two new teams. The show will debut on the ComedySportz Main Stage this summer.

In addition to making magic and drama on our stage, Matt has appeared in over 50 national TV commercials and made appearances on such TV shows as Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother and Without a Trace. He plays in a bluegrass band, The Dust Bowl Cavaliers, who recently performed a night of music and comedy with comedian Paul F. Tompkins and popular podcast Superego. And he also put together the stage musical FELLOWSHIP! The Musical Parody to The Fellowship of the Ring. This month, Fellowship! won the first-ever Saturn Award for Best Local Stage Production: Small Theatre (the award is presented by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror).
